Our Virtual Program: How Film Analysis Boosts Foundational Football IQ by 20–50%

Stanley Alves · March 30, 2026 · 10 min read

Most players don't struggle because they "can't play." They struggle because the game moves fast, pressure arrives faster, and decision-making gets rushed.

That is exactly why we built the Champions Premier Virtual Program.

Our goal: use third-person film analysis to help players make better decisions when they receive the ball.

Hypothesis: a third-person perspective improves decision-making that progresses the game forward.

Who we studied (criteria)

To keep this consistent and fair, we only studied players who met both requirements:

  • Met with Champions Premier at least 5 times in a 2-month period
  • Playing at a high level: MLS Academy, MLS NEXT, or ECNL

What we measure (the moment that matters)

We only track clips where the player receives the ball and has more than two calm touches.

Two calm touches means:

  • Touch 1: control with composure
  • Touch 2: set up the next action (pass, carry, dribble, or shot)

This keeps the data focused on real decision-making moments, not emergency one-touch clearances.

Controlled variables (what we track on purpose)

These are the foundational football behaviors we grade every time the player receives:

  • Scanning Right + Left — We track scans per side because awareness is the base of good decisions.
  • Communication — We count meaningful interactions initiated and completed with teammates.
  • Body Orientation — Can the player get shaped to play forward, or do they get stuck negative?
  • Receiving on the Back Foot — This increases the chance the next action is forward and faster.
  • Creating Contact — Using the body to protect possession and create space.
  • Progressing Play — Actions that move the ball and the team forward.
  • Chances Created — Final-third actions that lead to real scoring opportunities.

Uncontrolled variables (what we can't control)

These change every match, so we account for them by tracking improvement over time:

  • Opponent defensive positioning
  • Opponent tactical formation
  • Pass quality from teammates
  • Ground vs aerial passes
  • Transitions and chaotic game moments
  • Proximity of defenders
  • How often a player even gets the ball

What we're seeing: 20–50% improvement in foundational actions

Across the players who fit our criteria, we consistently see 20–50% improvement in the foundational actions that drive game IQ.

Here is one clean example from Game 1 to Game 2 success rates:

  • Scanning Right: +40% (20% to 60%)
  • Scanning Left: +22% (22% to 44%)
  • Body Orientation: +36% (44% to 80%)
  • Receiving Back Foot: +40% (38% to 78%)
  • Communication: +40% (20% to 60%)
  • Creating Contact: +44% (25% to 69%)
  • Progressing Play: +52% (33% to 85%)
  • Chances Created: +50% (25% to 75%)
  • Time on ball > 3 seconds: +53% (30% to 83%)

Why this matters

We are not collecting stats to look smart. We are building players who can:

  • See more before the ball arrives
  • Stay composed under pressure
  • Play forward more consistently
  • Create more advantage actions in real game speed

Better awareness leads to better decisions. Better decisions lead to better football.
